Mr Sherrington,

"Welcome to KEGS.  It is a great honour and privilege for me to be the Headteacher of this remarkable school and I hope that our website conveys a sense of the passion and dynamism that students and staff bring to all that they do, making KEGS such a wonderful place to learn and to work.  KEGS is one of England's leading state schools with a proud history dating back to its foundation in 1551 and now has a growing reputation as a leading-edge 21st Century Grammar School and a centre of excellence in learning.  The school has achieved a sustained record of outstanding examination and inspection outcomes over recent years and provides a fabulously nurturing environment in which extremely able students from a wide range of social and ethnic backgrounds flourish.

As a school specialising in 'Gifted and Talented' provision, we have a strong focus on academic achievement leading to university entrance.  We provide a rigorous and challenging curriculum at all levels, engaging students with a range of exciting learning strategies and insist on high expectations of students in all aspects of school life.

However, our key objective is to enable our students to develop as well-rounded individuals, ambitious for the role they can play as the leaders of the future; life-long learners equipped to meet the challenges of a turbulent world and to be principled global citizens with a commitment to environmental sustainability and a strong sense of duty to serve the needs of others.  More simply, we aim for students to enjoy coming to school each day for the sheer love of learning and the experience of belonging to the KEGS community.   Our pastoral systems ensure that every student is guided and cared for and our extra-curricular provision is outstanding.  We provide an extremely rich and diverse programme including a range of opportunities in sport, music and drama; an extraordinary range of overseas tours, expeditions and exchanges and the opportunity to join our magnificent, 150-strong CCF contingent.

KEGS is proud of its status as a High Performing Specialist School and the work that we do as a Science College, a Languages College and a member of the Leading Edge Partnership Programme.  We have established an extensive network of successful partnerships with local primary and secondary schools and believe strongly that the school should play a key role in the Chelmsford community as it has done for centuries.

The school's motto is 'Quicquid agas sapiens age fortiter ex animoque'   - Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might (Ecclesiastes 9:10) - and this is precisely the spirit in which KEGS students and staff work on a daily basis.   Please take time to browse through these pages to find further information.  If you would like to arrange a visit, please contact me at tsherrington at our kegs.org.uk email address.  We are more than happy for visitors to come to see the school in action."
